Swedish Presidency of the EU Council to continue work on EHDS and discuss pharmaceutical legislation

**Brussels, 10 January 2023 – the European Association of E-Pharmacies (EAEP), as the organisation representing the e-pharmacy sector in Europe, welcomes the incoming Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), and applauds the achievements of the outgoing Czech Presidency. **

While the Swedish Presidency takes place in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a severe war in Ukraine, which have worsened inflation and fuelled the energy crisis, the EAEP believes it is of utmost importance to maintain the discussions on health policy high on the Council’s agenda, with a view to strengthening Europe’s healthcare systems in the interest of patients.

The first half of 2023 will indeed see two crucial dossiers on the table for the healthcare sector: the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and the revision of the pharmaceutical legislation.

As for the first one, the proposal is currently being discussed in the Council of the EU and European Parliament, with key advancements expected on both the primary and secondary use of health data. The EAEP calls on the Swedish Presidency to continue the efforts and works carried out within the Council so far, in order to accelerate a final agreement on the dossier and foster a level playing field for healthcare providers. As for the second one, the current Presidency is expected to initiate the readings on the proposal, which is scheduled for publication in March.

The EAEP is fully behind the Presidency’s priorities in the area of healthcare and remains committed to engaging in open discussions with the Council of the EU on upcoming initiatives, with a view to advancing health policy and achieving a better healthcare system for patients in Europe.
