EAEP joins EU Critical Medicines Alliance aiming to address vulnerabilities in supply chains

Brussels, 5 March 2024 – the European Association of E-pharmacies (EAEP) has been admitted as member of the newly-created EU Critical Medicines Alliance, a consultative platform to the European Commission and other EU decision-makers aiming to identify industrial challenges and determining the most suitable actions and tools to effectively address vulnerabilities in critical medicines supply chains.

With a duration of 5 years, the Critical Medicines Alliance, is a consultative mechanism which brings together all relevant stakeholders, to identify priorities for action and propose solutions to strengthen the supply of critical medicines in the EU, to better prevent and combat their shortages. One of the priorities of the European Health Union is the timely and equal access to medicines for all European patients. Alongside the EU Pharmaceutical Legislation, currently being revised, the Critical Medicines Alliance will constitute an industrial and competitiveness dimension necessary to mobilise all stakeholders and gather crucial input.

The key objective of the Alliance is to provide an inclusive and transparent consultative platform to the European Commission and other EU decision-makers, identifying industrial challenges and determining the most suitable actions and tools to effectively address vulnerabilities in critical medicines supply chains.

The EAEP will focus its contribution especially on two pillars of the upcoming actvities of the Alliance: (i) developing a common strategic approach to medicines stockpiling in the EU; and (ii) helping to leverage and align EU and national funding to implement solutions to medicines shortages.

The Alliance is expected to start its work in Spring 2024 and publish its first recommendations on actions to take by Autumn.
